Fly Fishing Alaska: Katmai Trophy Lodge
Last fall we had a chance to visit the Katmai Trophy Lodge with a group of friends to get that uniquely Alaskan experience… and lift a few fat salmonids!
Alaska has so much to offer when it comes to angling. As a fly fisherman from the lower 48 it can be tough to determine what to target or what is the best place to go. We settled on Katmai Trophy Lodge because of the variety of high quality fisheries in close proximity to the lodge. The various rivers and situations this lodge offers met the needs of everyone in the group and no one ever got bored.
James and his team of guides took us to several different distinct zones and got us into the type of situations you dream of since you pick up a fly rod. Their guides have expertise in several different styles of fishing depending on the particular river and species your after. They possess a distinct and deep understanding of the local fisheries that only comes with years of fishing and exploring these waters. Every day we returned to the lodge with tales of new PB’s, new species, or of a the largest moose you have ever seen in your life!
Aside from the the fishing, wildlife, and scenery, the lodge provided the perfect spot to rally at the end of the day, have a cocktail, a delicious meal, and trade stories of the days adventures. We headed up there with a diverse group of anglers. Old, young, experienced, and inexperienced, we all had a fantastic time forging new relationships with staff, guides and among ourselves. I honestly can not wait to get back up there. Stop waiting, you won’t regret it!
Here is a video with a few of the fish caught that week…
